Moving Home: How Do You Compare to the Average Brit?

Moving home is a major life event. While some people only do it a handful of times, others make a habit of relocating. But where do you sit on the scale? Are you the type who’s always chasing a new beginning, or have you been in your current property so long that you’ve become part of the furniture?

To find out how your experience of moving home compares to the national average, a recent survey from Compare My Move offers some fascinating insight into how often Brits pack up and start afresh.

How Often Do People Move?

Compare My Move surveyed 2,000 people across the UK to understand their home moving habits, and here’s what they found:

  • Moved two or three times: 29%
  • Moved four to six times: 32%
  • Moved seven to nine times: 15%
  • Moved ten to twelve times: 7%
  • Moved more than twelve times: 7%

From this, we learn that the average Brit moves six times in their life.

The most common reasons for moving home were to upsize, downsize or for a lifestyle change. Interestingly, just 3% of respondents said they moved for work-related reasons, challenging the idea that job mobility drives most relocations.

A Decline in Moving Trends

Contrary to popular belief that society today is more transient, long-term data suggests people are actually moving less than they used to. Researchers at Queen’s University Belfast reviewed Census housing data and discovered a sharp decline in the number of people relocating in the UK since the 1970s.

Their findings showed that a million fewer people moved house in the 2000s compared to the 1970s. This decline isn’t unique to the UK either. Similar trends have been recorded in countries like Australia, the United States, and Germany.

Why Are People Moving Less?

A combination of economic and demographic factors appears to be behind this shift. The researchers pointed to a shortage of affordable housing, higher property prices, and an ageing population. Young adults are also staying in the family home longer due to financial pressures, delaying their entry into the housing market.

Older homeowners, meanwhile, are more likely to stay put, contributing to what’s known as housing stagnation. These factors combined mean that when people do decide to move, it tends to be a more significant and considered decision.

Finding Your Forever Home

With moving home now less frequent than it used to be, each move carries greater importance. Whether you’re downsizing, upsizing, or simply seeking a change in lifestyle, choosing the right support can make all the difference.

Working with a trusted local estate agent can help ensure your next move is as smooth and stress-free as possible. From accurate property valuations and effective marketing to handling viewings and negotiations, a professional agent helps guide you every step of the way.
